The Basics to Ferret Breeding from Home
Ferrets are such lovely creatures to have as pets in homes. At times people get too fond of them which often lead to their decision of breeding them in their own homes. Indeed, ferret breeding is possible to do in your own homes. However since it may not necessarily be an easy task, it will require a certain portion of your home, a huge part of your finances and definitely a huge effort from you.
In addition, ferret breeding is not for everybody. It definitely requires patience on the part of the breeder since ferrets are not entirely like other animals which are relatively easier to breed and maintain.
There are a lot of things involved in ferret breeding and discussed below are simply the basics of them.
First, before you start on breeding ferrets, it is important that you already have the complete supplies to maintain them in the future. This means that you have already allotted a certain portion of your house where they can be bred and you have already bought the necessary supplies such as cages, blankets, litter boxes, food and toys. In addition to these, it is advisable that you have done your research by going through different resource materials on ferret breeding.
Second, it is important that you understand the courtship which happens between a male and female ferret. Their courtship may not entirely be as clean as you may think and if you think you do not have the stomach to endure such sight, then it is best that you do not watch while they do their deed. Also, as part of their nature, male ferrets have the tendency to cover themselves with their urine to be even more attractive to their counterparts. This will then entail you to be cautious of such scent that may linger around your breeding area.
Third, you are going to assist the female ferret in her pregnancy so it means that you must be capable in nursing both her and her babies. A female ferret’s pregnancy will last about 42 days and during this period of time it is best that you take good care of her since she will be a lot clucky most of the time and she may also become fatter than normal. Also, you have to be aware that the mother may actually eat her babies. This means that you have to make sure that there are no dead kits within her cage to prevent her from eating them.
Fifth, you have to make sure that the home of your ferrets is well ventilated since it may tend to smell most of the time. You have to always maintain it clean and always make sure that your ferrets are getting the right nutrition each day.
Sixth, when the babies, or kits, reach the age of 8 weeks or perhaps 12 weeks, then they are ready to leave their mothers. You can provide a separate area wherein they can stay most of the time. However, let them bond with their mother so as to prevent from feeling abandoned.
With all these, simply make sure that you are letting your ferrets go on with their natural habits and routines. Make sure that they are properly fed and well nourished. As long as you are capable of taking care of them, then breeding won’t be as difficult as many people think.
