Is Your Pet Overweight?

If you’ve noticed that your pet has been lethargic or sleeping a lot, it could be due to excess weight. How do you tell if you dog or cat is overweight? Run your hands firmly along your pet’s sides, and if you can’t feel their ribs easily, there could be a weight problem for that pet. To make sure, have the pet examine by a veterrinarian.

If your pet is overweight, it could be the result of Cushing’s disease or an overactive thyroid. However, if the weight gain is due to overeating, then there is a chance the pet could contract such diseases as diabetes, arthritis and heart disease.

To slim down, your pet will need to follow a diet and exercise program, similar to that being followed by a human. Here are a few pointers–

Consult your vet. He/she can rule out any underlying condition that could have caused the weight gain. The vet can also help you map out a weight loss plan for your pet and can even recommend the type of food to feed your pet during this period. You don’t want your pet to lose the excess weight too fast, so your vet should be able to advise on that as well.
Limit food intake. Many dogs and cats will eat anything you put in front of them. It is difficult to ignore those pleading eyes, but you must tell yourself that it is for their own good. Stick to the diet plan that you and your vet agreed to.
Add fiber. Your vet may recommend that you add some fiber to the pet’s food intake. Fiber can help your pet feel fuller by partaking of fewer calories.
Exercise. Make sure your pet gets plenty of exercise. Take the pet for a walk, play with them on a regular basis. Dog and cats need to be active. The exercise won’t hurt you, the owner, either.
