How To Play With Your Dog And Really Have Lots Of Fun
It is healthy and essential that you play with your dog and by following a few rules, you and your dog will have more fun and get far more out of the experience. We should teach our dogs simple manners and how to go about behaving the proper way. Whatever games are played, you should enforce a set of simple rules.
No mouthing
Mouthing people or clothing is not allowed. Encourage your dog to hold a toy to make him less likely to do this, and play calmer games.
No jumping up
Whatever he learns in a game, he will exhibit at other times. Therefore, if he jumps at you and you throw the toy, he will jump up at other times too. Teach him that having four feet on the ground is what brings the reward of the game continuing. If he is likely to jump, teach him to sit down and keep still instead.
No snatching the toy
Basic manners mean that he should not try to grab the toy. Teach to give up the toy when asked. In order to teach your dog to give things to you, you must give him a good reason to do so. Do not try to grab the toy, as this will make him hold on harder. Instead, reward him for coming to you, then produce something interesting, such as a treat or another toy. Make this really interesting by giving it lots of attention. When your dog drops his toy, tell him he is wonderful, pick it up and reward him with the treat or a game with the second toy. The word ‘give’ should begin to mean ‘spit that out quickly, as I have something much more interesting’.
No teasing
You are asking your dog to abide by your rules, but you must also consider him. Therefore, teasing him is not allowed, neither is anything he finds unpleasant. If the dog breaks the rules, it is the end of the game. If at any time, the dog breaks any of your rules, simply stop the game, having removed the toy first if possible. Walk away and ignore your dog. He will soon learn that all fun stops if he breaks the rules. Next time, play calmer, gentler games to help your dog understand what you want.
Any other rules
Certain circumstances will need extra thought. If you have young children or elderly people in the household, or if your dog is especially large or powerful, you may need to impose extra precautions. No barking is a particularly good rule for noisy dogs.
Toys
There are lots of different types of toys around. Do not feel that you have to spend a fortune on the latest toy. Look around and use toys that appeal to you and your dog. Try to have a variety so that you and your dog can play different games. There are tough toys that are suitable for many dogs. There are toys sold as indestructible, which are great for boisterous and energetic dogs. Have different toys for different games. Some toys may be left with your dog, whilst you keep others for games which you initiate. Remember though, safety is essential. Depending on your dog, his age, size, personality and the game being played, different toys will suitab1e. Check toys regularly for wear and tear and replace when necessary.
