How to Get Your Dog Involved in the Community?

Get Out and Shop

Something as simple as a trip to the local pet store can be a fun community experience. More and more pet stores, including most of the major chains, now allow leashed pets in their aisles, and pet stores are also a great place to meet other dog lovers. And the dogs love roaming through the store picking out their own toys and treats.

So don’t forget your pet on your next shopping trip. You just may find that he loves shopping as much as you do.

Show Off Your Pet

Not all dog shows are as formal as the one sponsored by the Westminster Kennel Club. Some shows are held just for fun, and the dogs seem to enjoy the excitement as much as their owners do. If your community has a local dog owner’s group, you may be able to find information about shows and other events in your area.

There are many other opportunities for proud owners to show off their pets as well. Charity walks are a great way for owners and their pets to get some healthy exercise while raising money for a good cause. Many different organizations sponsor these kinds of charity walks, with the proceeds benefiting everything from cancer research to a new animal shelter. No matter what the cause you and your pet can have lots of fun and enjoy a great day among other animal lovers.

Agility Trials

If your pet loves to run, play and jump, you may want to look for some local agility trials. These fun events allow dogs to strut their stuff and owners to show off their well trained and fit canine companions. The rules and courses will vary from club to club and event to event, so be sure to ask about qualifications, entry fees, dates and other essential information.

Hiking Clubs

What could be more fun than hiking through the woods with your dog? How about hiking through the woods with a dozen dogs. Many hiking clubs welcome four legged members, and hiking can provide some great exercise for both pets and their owners. If there is a local hiking club in your area, be sure to ask if dogs are welcome on the treks. And if you can’t find a pet friendly hiking club in your town, why not put your organizing skills to work and start one?

There are of course many other possibilities for having fun with your pet, but the above examples should give you a good start… Dogs are wonderful companions, and they can share many parts of our lives. So get out and enjoy the great outdoors with your dog today.
