Ferrets are rapidly becoming the pet of choice for many pet lovers and recreationists but unfortunately not many people have adequate information to care for their ferret. It is with this concern that the ferret Wikipedia was created to give up to date and the latest ferret care information.
I can hear you questioning what a Wikipedia is, and ferret Wikipedia what’s that? Well let me clear it up very quickly. A Wikipedia is usually a free, online open content encyclopedia that is created through collaboration among a community of users known as wikipedians. Now the name wiki comes from a server program that allows other users to edit web site content through their web browser. Ferret Wikipedia is an encyclopedic documentation of detailed ferret care information.

Taxonomy
Mustelidae or Mustelids (which comes from Latin mustela, weasel), commonly called the weasel family, is a family of carnivorous mammals. This is one of the most diverse family and the largest in the order Carnivora.
The domestic ferret (Mustela putorius furo), is a small animal from the Mustelidae family. There are other Mustelids that have the word “ferret” in their name, but they are different.
The ferret has a long, thin, slender body and looks like a weasel or a rat. They also have a lot of different colors and markings on their fur coating. Ferrets can have a strange scent which is a result of the natural oils produced by them. Apart from being an excellent pet the domestic ferret is also used for hunting. Their thin bodies allow them to easily go down into holes and hunt rabbits and rodents.
The family Mustelidae is said to include up to five sub-families, namely: Lutrinae, Melinae, Mellivorinae, Taxideinae, and Mustelinae. This family also includes 59 species in 22 genera. Some members of the family includes: weasel, sea otter, wolverine, giant otter, mink, ferret and badger.
Diet
Ferrets are obligate carnivores and require a high-protein, high-fat diet. Ferret food should contain 35-40 percent protein and 15-20 percent fats. High sugar content increases the chances of insulinoma and adrenal failure. They cannot properly derive much energy from plant-based foods because of their relatively short gastro-intestinal tract, hence used only as supplements and not replacement for regular diet.
Ferret Care
In many ways ferrets are like kittens that never grow up. They are full of energy and very curious. In caring for your ferret it’s important to understand their behavior. Ferrets are good at getting into holes in walls, cupboards, or even behind household appliances. As a result the chance of injury is heightened. It is therefore important to ferret-proof your home before acquiring one as a pet.
Social Nature
Ferrets are extremely social animals, and enjoy playing with other ferrets, pets, and even humans. Ferrets can often be seen piled on top of each other while sleeping. A useful piece of ferret care information is to raise more than one ferret to ensure they don’t suffer from loneliness. However, if you can ensure that your ferret receives a lot of play time then keeping one ferret is also fine.
Ferrets tend to spend most of their time sleeping but when awake they are relentlessly exploring their environment.
Terminology and coloring
The male ferret is called a hob; females are jills. A neutered female is a sprite, while a neutered male is a gib. Ferrets under one old are called kits.
Neutering refer to the removal of the reproductive organs of a male or female ferret. Spaying is the specific term referring to the neutering of a female ferret while castration is the specific term referring to the neutering of a male ferret.
Ferrets come in a variety of colors, but the five most common colors are as follows: albino, cinnamon, sable, Siamese and champagne mitt.
