Educating Your Dog
Whoever said you cannot teach an old dog-new trick was not totally correct. Dogs of all ages can be taught proper ways to behave it is simply easier when they are young. Many people put off training their dogs because they think their pets will naturally assimilate and behave properly, and this is the first mistake.
An educated dog is a happy dog because he lives in a happier healthier environment with owners who are not stressed and agitated. While this is a nice benefit there is also, times when it can be necessary for you to have an educated dog.
Health
Educating your dog comes in handy if your pet is ever injured or ill. You will need to be able to check your pet over thoroughly in these circumstances and if you have already taught your dog to sit, stay it will be much easier to bandage or medicate them.
Sit and Stay
Dogs can become territorial at times, growling and taking on the role of protector. This is nice when a burglar is trying to break into your home, however it is not appropriate when guests come over for dinner. At times like this, you want to be able to control your dog with a few words or gestures. This keeps your guests safe and protects you and the dog from potential legal liabilities. Sit and stay commands are a dog owners lifeline.
Imagine this scenario, you open the door to invite in your guests and your precious pet darts out the door and into the street, which is heavily traveled. It is at this point many people realize that an educated dog who understands commands would be a much safer animal.
Education Process
Educating your dog is not a complicated but it will take diligence and perseverance from each and every family member who is interacting with the dog. Dogs are similar to children in many respects in that consistency is absolutely key. For instance if you want Fido to stay off the furniture then there can never be a time when it is all right for him to jump on the couch. Dogs do not do well with sometimes discipline and training.
Many people mistake harsh physical punishment as a training tool. The truth of the matter is if you are using extreme force to achieve obedience you are barking up the wrong tree. The only thing you can accomplish when you strike a pet is that your dog will fear and maybe even dislike you. Severe penalties should never be used to educate your dog.
Conclusion
A safe dog is a happy dog and when properly educated you can tell your dog to stop or drop a harmful object before it has time to do damage. Young dogs especially are prone to eating batteries, pens or basically anything they can get their little teeth upon any of which can cause injury or illness. Keep your dog safe from accidental or self-inflicted harm by taking the time to educate him or her properly.
