We now understand that a great deal of learning happens when our dog is very young and the period from a few weeks old to five months is very significant. This is when your dog will learn much of what will influence their adult behavior in later life. So really, the earlier we start to teach our new pup’s and show them how we would like them to behave – the better things will be for everyone.

When our puppy grows up how would you want them to behave? You will, of course, really like them to be happy, well-behaved and confident but how do we really go about this? By introducing them in a careful way to the right scenarios we can help them to really get to know, and like people whilst they are very young. It’s a known fact that puppies will achieve the most skills and knowledge while they are at a young age, they will still keep on progressing and learn throughout their life, but at a much slower rate.

You really must then, make the most of these precious first few weeks of his life to give your pup the best possible start in life and establish a good foundation. But don’t be bothered if your puppy is beyond this stage as we can still do many other things, but these will be a little harder to do. But if your dog is demonstrating unwanted behavior then you must do things gradually.

One of the great advantages of owning a dog as a pet, and why they are so successful is that they can learn to not mess in the house. House training is usually one of the first things you will teach you pup so you will want to get it right so your home doesn’t get in a mess and also your pup will be learning about you.

You must make your actions consistent, clear and easy to understand so that you will have a good foundation to build on for every else he will need to know. But if he realizes that you are inconsistent and unpredictable, his ability to learn will be affected in the future.

Do not simply let your puppy go into the yard in case he has forgotten what he needed to do – go with him. After he goes to do his mess, try to praise him and give him something special too. Make sure you treat him straight away an do not wait until he is back indoors else he wont make the link as to why he is being rewarded.
Give him several minutes to empty himself but do not sidetrack him. Encourage him to locate his special area but if he has not done it in a practical length of time then ask him back indoors. When it does look like your pup needs to go then keep an eye on him as you do not want him to make a mess indoors. The wrong habit is learnt each and every time he makes a mistake but when he gets it right he will learn the appropriate behavior.

Please do not smack him if he has a mistake as this will only give the impression to him that you are not a nice owner and do horrible things to him. The overall success of this challenge depends of your commitment and patience. Remember – if he has made a mistake – it is not his fault.
