Dog proprietors, most oftentimes than not, know their dogs care their personal friends or children.

The average price of an American bulldog puppy is approximately $800. If you think that is expensive, wait until I list the average price of a French bulldog. The last time I sold one, the deal was settled amicably at $2000 for a single puppy. The message is clear – investing on a French bulldog is going to be a pricey affair. Unless you have ample crates of cash stocked up in the basement, I guess you will be fine with an American bulldog. It is tough to find purebred dogs these days. In the succeeding sections, I will demonstrate some steps that can be considered if you really want to invest in one of these!

Countless websites specialize in the listing and sales of French bulldog puppies. Since the niche is highly lucrative, one will find many so-called reputed vendors. Seeking the services of some of the best online vendors will streamline the rest of the processes. The entire complexity of the situation seems to concentrate on this particular spot – how will a novice user differentiate between spurious and genuine offers that are listed online? Do not fret; help is at hand because I will illustrate some fine prints that are often ignored by spurious vendors.

Spurious vendors will trick the novice users by displaying never before heard prices. In some portals, I came across $500 listed for a four-week-old French bulldog puppy. It is imperative that you must never fall for such traps. The genuine portals are now concentrating on strengthening their user base by asking for proper identification. In simpler terms, now once you have registered in one such portal, you will be required to provide photo identification. The website personnel will verify these details, and they will activate your account.

You might be aware of the simple fact that as the age of the dog increases, the sale price of the same dog falls. Stay away from sellers who ask for $2000 for a 12-week-old puppy. The usual price bracket is $1000 to $1200 for these puppies! Take some time to read the testimonials listed by previous clients. The reputed websites will always ask the clients to provide feedback and will alter their business model to satisfy the larger demands of the population. Such activities will be practically absent in the spurious portals.

If you are looking for purebred French bulldogs, you must confirm it with the seller in writing. This will aid you at a later date if the seller decides to take back his statement. Most of the portals that deal with the sale of puppies have a reputation system – the more the reputation, the better the client. Furthermore, consider the method of transportation; these puppies must be transported under air-conditioned environments. Verify whether the seller is willing to provide such facilities. Paying a couple of hundreds extra for the safe transportation of the dog is recommended.

If you love bulldogs why not invest in some bulldog rings? Visit http://www.keithlivingstondesign.com/ for more information.

Is your pooch mad for people food? Does your kitty like to self-medicate? Sadly, not everything we love is good for us. In fact, many common household goods that we take for granted as harmless can poison our furry friends. In 2009, the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center in Urbana, IL, handled more than 140,000 cases of pets exposed to toxic household substances, including insecticides, cleaning supplies and prescription medications.

Human Medications

For several years, human medications have been number one on the ASPCA’s list of common hazards, and 2009 was no exception. Last year, the ASPCA managed 45,816 calls involving prescription and over-the-counter drugs such as painkillers, cold medications, antidepressants and dietary supplements. Pets often snatch pill vials from counters and nightstands or gobble up medications accidentally dropped on the floor, so it’s essential to keep meds tucked away in hard-to-reach cabinets.

Insecticides

In our effort to battle home invasions by unwelcome pests, we often unwittingly put our furry friends at risk. In 2009, our toxicologists fielded 29,020 calls related to insecticides. One of the most common incidents involved the misuse of flea and tick products—such as applying the wrong topical treatment to the wrong species. Thus, it’s always important to talk to your pet’s veterinarian before beginning any flea and tick control program.

People Food

People food like grapes, raisins, avocado and products containing xylitol, like gum, can seriously disable our furry friends, and accounted for more than 17,453 cases in 2009. One of the worst offenders—chocolate—contains large amounts of methylxanthines, which, if ingested in significant amounts, can cause vomiting, diarrhea, panting, excessive thirst, urination, hyperactivity, and in severe cases, abnormal heart rhythm, tremors and seizures.

Plants

Common houseplants were the subject of 7,858 calls to APCC in 2009. Varieties such as azalea, rhododendron, sago palm, lilies, kalanchoe and schefflera are often found in homes and can be harmful to pets. Lilies are especially toxic to cats, and can cause life-threatening kidney failure even in small amounts.

Veterinary Medications

Even though veterinary medications are intended for pets, they’re often misapplied or improperly dispensed by well-meaning pet parents. In 2009, the ASPCA managed 7,680 cases involving animal-related preparations such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, heartworm preventatives, de-wormers, antibiotics, vaccines and nutritional supplements.

Rodenticides

Last year, the ASPCA received 6,639 calls about pets who had accidentally ingested rat and mouse poisons. Many baits used to attract rodents contain inactive ingredients that are attractive to pets as well. Depending on the type of rodenticide, ingestions can lead to potentially life-threatening problems for pets including bleeding, seizures or kidney damage.

Household Cleaners

Everybody knows that household cleaning supplies can be toxic to adults and children, but few take precautions to protect their pets from common agents such as bleaches, detergents and disinfectants. Last year, the ASPCA received 4,143 calls related to household cleaners. These products, when inhaled by our furry friends, can cause serious gastrointestinal distress and irritation to the respiratory tract.

Heavy Metals

It’s not too much loud music that constitutes our next pet poison offender. Instead, it’s heavy metals such as lead, zinc and mercury, which accounted for 3,304 cases of pet poisonings in 2009. Lead is especially pernicious, and pets are exposed to it through many sources, including consumer products, paint chips, linoleum, and lead dust produced when surfaces in older homes are scraped or sanded.

Garden Products

It may keep your grass green, but certain types of fertilizer and garden products can cause problems for outdoor cats and dogs. Last year, the ASPCA fielded 2,329 calls related to fertilizer exposure, which can cause severe gastric upset and possibly gastrointestinal obstruction.

Chemical Hazards

In 2009, the ASPCA handled approximately 2,175 cases of pet exposure to chemical hazards. A category on the rise, chemical hazards, found in ethylene glycol antifreeze, paint thinner, drain cleaners and pool/spa chemicals, form a substantial danger to pets. Substances in this group can cause gastrointestinal upset, depression, respiratory difficulties and chemical burns.

Prevention is really key to avoiding accidental exposure, but if you suspect your pet has ingested something toxic, please contact your veterinarian or the Animal Poison Control Center’s 24-hour hotline at (888) 426-4435.

Ferrets are playful, loving and adventurous creatures, but before you grab the first one that you see, there are some things to look out for, before you even buy a ferret.

All of the above traits are great to have in a ferret, but you should give him a good look over before you purchase. If this is your first time purchasing a ferret, below are some pointers that you should keep in mind.

1. Your new ferrets fur should be shiny, and soft to the touch. He should have a full covering of fur, with no patches of fur missing.

2. He should have clear and bright eyes, with no discharge from the eyes, the ears and the nose.

3. The undercoat of the ferret should be clean and healthy looking.

4. Look for signs that the ferret might be experiencing bloating or diarrhea. This could mean that he might be infected with parasites, or that he might have an illness.

5. Try observing the ferret for a few minutes, just to see how active he is. Ferrets are usually bounding around with energy, so If he appears to be a little bit sluggish, then he might have a problem.

You will have to consider the age of the ferret that you want to buy, and whether or not he will fit into into your lifestyle. A younger, or a baby ferret (kit) will demand a lot more care and attention, whereas a more mature ferret will not require the same level of attention.

Do you want a male or a female ferret? I suppose that will come down to your own personal
choice. Whatever sex you do eventually decide to buy though, you will definatly want to get them fixed.

And how many ferrets do you want? Most people can cope quite happily with just one ferret, but there are others who will decide on two or more. That will require a lot more dedication and hard work.

Think very carefully before you buy your first ferret, and try to follow the basic guidelines set out above. That way the ferret that you do buy should be fit and healthy from the onset, then it will be up to you to keep him that way.

The proper health care and diet will ensure that your ferret will have a long and happy life. For more information about getting a new ferret click here.

Ferrets are rapidly becoming the pet of choice for many pet lovers and recreationists but unfortunately not many people have adequate information to care for their ferret. It is with this concern that the ferret Wikipedia was created to give up to date and the latest ferret care information.

I can hear you questioning what a Wikipedia is, and ferret Wikipedia what’s that? Well let me clear it up very quickly. A Wikipedia is usually a free, online open content encyclopedia that is created through collaboration among a community of users known as wikipedians. Now the name wiki comes from a server program that allows other users to edit web site content through their web browser. Ferret Wikipedia is an encyclopedic documentation of detailed ferret care information.

This Wikipedia will give ferret parents useful information to care for their pets. Some of the topics to be covered are: taxonomy, ferret care, diet, social nature, terminology and coloring.

Taxonomy

Mustelidae or Mustelids (which comes from Latin mustela, weasel), commonly called the weasel family, is a family of carnivorous mammals. This is one of the most diverse family and the largest in the order Carnivora.

The domestic ferret (Mustela putorius furo), is a small animal from the Mustelidae family. There are other Mustelids that have the word “ferret” in their name, but they are different.

The ferret has a long, thin, slender body and looks like a weasel or a rat. They also have a lot of different colors and markings on their fur coating. Ferrets can have a strange scent which is a result of the natural oils produced by them. Apart from being an excellent pet the domestic ferret is also used for hunting. Their thin bodies allow them to easily go down into holes and hunt rabbits and rodents.

The family Mustelidae is said to include up to five sub-families, namely: Lutrinae, Melinae, Mellivorinae, Taxideinae, and Mustelinae. This family also includes 59 species in 22 genera. Some members of the family includes: weasel, sea otter, wolverine, giant otter, mink, ferret and badger.

Diet

Ferrets are obligate carnivores and require a high-protein, high-fat diet. Ferret food should contain 35-40 percent protein and 15-20 percent fats. High sugar content increases the chances of insulinoma and adrenal failure. They cannot properly derive much energy from plant-based foods because of their relatively short gastro-intestinal tract, hence used only as supplements and not replacement for regular diet.

Ferret Care

In many ways ferrets are like kittens that never grow up. They are full of energy and very curious. In caring for your ferret it’s important to understand their behavior. Ferrets are good at getting into holes in walls, cupboards, or even behind household appliances. As a result the chance of injury is heightened. It is therefore important to ferret-proof your home before acquiring one as a pet.

Social Nature

Ferrets are extremely social animals, and enjoy playing with other ferrets, pets, and even humans. Ferrets can often be seen piled on top of each other while sleeping. A useful piece of ferret care information is to raise more than one ferret to ensure they don’t suffer from loneliness. However, if you can ensure that your ferret receives a lot of play time then keeping one ferret is also fine.

Ferrets tend to spend most of their time sleeping but when awake they are relentlessly exploring their environment.

Terminology and coloring

The male ferret is called a hob; females are jills. A neutered female is a sprite, while a neutered male is a gib. Ferrets under one old are called kits.

Neutering refer to the removal of the reproductive organs of a male or female ferret. Spaying is the specific term referring to the neutering of a female ferret while castration is the specific term referring to the neutering of a male ferret.

Ferrets come in a variety of colors, but the five most common colors are as follows: albino, cinnamon, sable, Siamese and champagne mitt.

They are cute, loveable and very appealing to most people. Well, that’s how most people see a baby ferret and that’s how you’ll feel about your baby ferret too. But you must understand that caring for a baby ferret takes a lot of love, time and dedication just like caring for a baby of any kind. The reward in the end is that you would have reared this pet from a baby by yourself; it would be extremely familiar with you.

This would have better conditioned you to its predisposition, such as the fact that it has a boundless supply of energy, very curious, fearless to the point of been foolish. Raising a baby ferret also allow you to start training it proper socialization skills necessary if it is to blend perfectly in its new family. Some vital skills to teach your baby ferret are: proper use of litter-box, not to nip, etc. Keenly watch how your baby ferret and young children play. Because baby ferrets are soft and cuddly, young children tend to squish them and therefore the baby ferret will start nipping them. Also, outside of their cage they get into difficulties by climbing into holes and spaces causing them injury.

Before you bring your baby ferret home it’s important that you take the ferret to the vet to be medically certified and properly checked. It is important for health reasons that the baby ferret undergoes a series of vaccinations to guard against diseases such as rabies etc. This is usually done by the baby ferret reached seven weeks old. If you are not thinking of breeding your ferret then taking this to neuter your ferret is a useful idea. Neutering not only control ferret breeding but also de-scent and make males less aggressive.

The baby ferret known as a kit is born blind and are practically hairless, also have a pink complexion. The first part of their lives is spent eating, sleeping, and growing. It only takes about twenty days for the kits color to darken, and soon after that their eyes begin to open. When they finally reach six weeks of age, they are able to be taken from their mothers.

How you prepare your baby ferret’s food is very important since they are obligate carnivores they require a high protein high fat diet .That aside because they are babies it’s essential that their food be moistened to help in their digestion. This should help prevent any problems with intestinal blockage. Typically ferret food should contain 35 percent protein and 20 percent fats. They also require a constant supply of fresh, clean water. When you take your baby ferret home from the pet store it’s useful if you gradually introduce a new food to their diet.

All baby ferrets need much room to run around, play, investigate and explore their environment. Their boundless energy keeps them always on the go. Housed your baby ferret in a large, clean and ferret specific cage so that he will feel comfortable. Try to avoid metal cages because they corrode easily and can cause harm to them.

Your baby ferret will love to hide in places, because he likes soft padding to burrow into and sleep. Baby ferrets, just like most mammals, need a constant supply of care and attention. Just in the same way that a human child would. Ferrets are very active creatures, and they will need to be properly cared for when they are babies, in order for them to live safe, long, and healthy lives

Issues with inappropriate urination are usually among the most commonly experienced problem by puppy lovers. As a matter of fact, improper urination coupled with defecation could be the most often cited contributing factor that dog lovers surrender such an animal into shelters.

So that you may address difficulty with inappropriate urination, you must have an understanding of the actual basis of the issue. There are many reasons why pet dogs drop control over their bladders, as well as it is important to learn their root cause within the difficulty so that it can be correctly attended to.

Excitement Urination

Canines often urinate when they become overly excited, and most dogs that are otherwise perfectly housebroken sometimes show their excitement by dribbling urine when greeting you excitedly. It is normal for some dogs to urinate when they get excited, and this can be a particular issue for many older dogs.

A lot of excitement induced urination occurs in young puppies, and it is caused by a lack of bladder control. The puppy may not even know he is urinating, and punishment will simply confuse him. Becoming angry with the puppy will quickly cause excitement urination to morph into submissive urination, thus compounding the issue. As the puppy gets older and develops better bladder control, this type of excitement urination should disappear.

The best cure for excitement urination is prevention. Preventing your dog from becoming over excited is the best way to control this problematic behavior. If your dog is excited by a particular stimulus or situation, it is important to repeatedly expose him to that situation until it no longer causes excessive excitement.

Submissive Urination

Submissive urination is a natural part of group conduct among some canines like pets. The submissive member of the pack shows his or her submissiveness by lowering itself and urinating. Since dogs are pack family pets, they may show their submissiveness to their master, who they regard being the group leader, through demonstrating this submissive urination.

Dogs who exhibit submissive urination are usually showing their insecurity. Unsocial zed and previously abused most dogs often exhibit submissive urination. These pet needs to be shown that there are more appropriate ways to express their submissive status, such as shaking hands or licking the owner’s hand.

The best way to deal with submissive urination problems is often to ignore the urination. Trying to reassure the dog can give the mistaken impression that you approve of the behavior, while scolding the dog can make the submissive urination worse.

Correcting problems with submissive urination ought to be directed at developing the dog’s self-confidence and helping him with new ways to present his respect. Helping the dog to raise his paw, sit on command, and similar behavioral instructions, is a good way for you to direct the dog’s admiration in the more suitable course.

Problems with urination are not always easy in order to deal with, but you should be consistent, and for you to usually reward acceptable behavior on the part of the dog. While urination complications do occur, it is often sensible to first rule out any kind of health conditions that may very well be causing those problems. Health issues like bladder infections can be the real cause of difficulty with unwanted urination.

Just after such medical problems are ruled out, you should find out what is causing the main issue, and treat it appropriately. Though it can be tempting for you to punish your dog for unacceptable elimination, doing so can only confuse and also further intimidate him.

The act of chewing seems to be a matter of personal preference among most dogs. Oftentimes, dog owners wind up with a pet that has no need to chew at all – unless it’s driven to it out of sheer boredom.

Other dog owners face the unfortunate scenario of a dog that demolishes everything in sight with insatiable chops.

If your dog is a chewing machine, it’s a problem that NEEDS to be address quickly. This article will show you how to do just that. So, let’s get to it and stop your dog from her destructive chewing!

Now, the phrase “destructive chewing” may sound redundant, because – by its very nature! – all chewing is destructive. Your dog has strong jaws full of sharp, pointy teeth: just about anything she begins to gnaw on is most likely going to be destroyed in minutes. So just to clarify, when I say “destructive chewing”, I’m referring to disapproved chewing: the type of chewing that’s focused on your own possessions and household items, instead of on your dog’s own designated toys and treats.

The 3 Main Reasons Why Dogs Chew

1. Most dogs have a natural craving to chew. It’s fun, it passes the time, and it’s a self-rewarding, self-reinforcing activity (meaning, if she’s chewing on something that tastes good, it will encourage her to chew even more.)

2. Chewing provides an anxious, bored, or lonely dog with an outlet for her emotions. To an anxious dog, the repetitive act of chewing is soothing – it’s the doggie equivalent of comfort food.

3. Under exercised dogs often use chewing as a way of burning up nervous energy and giving themselves something to occupy their time with.

6 Ways to Prevent Destructive Chewing

Dogs are perfectly capable of learning not to chew your stuff – you just have to put in a little effort first, that’s all.

1. Dog Proofing: Take control of the situation. Manage your own possessions. Your first step should be to dog-proof your home. Even if you have the best-behaved dog in the world, there’s still no reason to test her self-control – after all, dogs explore the world with their mouths.

Dog-proofing your home means taking whatever you don’t want to end up in her mouth, and making it unavailable. Think about her size and agility when deciding whether something’s out of reach: can she jump? Can she climb up or jump onto something else to reach the desired item? How tall is she when standing on her hind legs?

Common targets in the home include books, eyewear, clothing, shoes, garbage, and small crunchy appliances like cameras, cell phones, and remote controls.

It should go without saying that all food needs to be put securely away: don’t leave snacks on low tables (or even countertops – you’d be surprised how acrobatic she can be when there’s food at stake!), put all food into containers or the pantry. Rinse your dirty plates clean of any food scraps before leaving them by the sink.

2. Prevention: Prevent her from learning the joys of illegal chewing. The more times she manages to snatch a jawful of a forbidden substance – a chair-leg, a pillow, a running shoe – the more readily she’ll target those items in future. If you can prevent her from chewing your stuff in the first place, it’s a lot easier for her to understand what you expect of her. Practically speaking, this means confining her in a dog-proofed area until you’re confident of her understanding of the house rules.

3. Rule Setting: Don’t set her up for failure by blurring the boundaries between her stuff (OK to chew) and your stuff (not OK to chew). Don’t offer your dog cast-off clothes, shoes, or towels to chew and play with: realistically, you can’t possibly expect her to be able to tell the difference between your current shoes and the one she’s got in her mouth that you gave her five minutes ago.

4. Provision: Provide her with lots of tasty alternatives to your stuff. If her environment is relatively barren of attractive, appropriate chewing objects, you can hardly blame her for targeting your possessions. Remember, most dogs need to chew; if she’s an adolescent (under three years) or a puppy (under one year), her needs will be even more pronounced. Go on a toy and chew shopping spree, then give her two or three to play with at a time. Rotating the available toys every few days will keep things novel and interesting for her.

5. Supervision: Spend lots of time in active supervision. Yes, it might be easier for you to just keep her penned up in her crate, run, or the yard – but that’s boring and horrible for her, and hardly much fun for you either (if you wanted a pet that you don’t need to interact with, you’d have got a goldfish, right?) She can’t learn what you expect of her if she’s spending all her time boxed up in the dog-proof zone: she needs the opportunity to explore the boundaries of your expectations, so she can understand what’s appropriate and what’s not.

6. The Switcheroo Technique: When you catch her chewing something inappropriate, interrupt her by making a loud noise: clap your hands or make an “Ah-ah-aaaah!” noise. Then, immediately hand her a tasty and dog-appropriate alternative (a rawhide bone or other chew toy); as soon as her jaws close around it, praise her lavishly. There is no better way to get your dog to understand that chewing “her” toys equals praise from you, but everything else equals trouble.
