Goldfish Caretaking Basics
Goldfish make exciting, dynamic and beautiful pets. In general, they are relatively easy to care for, however, there are some essential requirements that you must fulfill if you want them to live happy long lives. With the right combination of good genetics and proper care, a goldfish can live for up to fifty years. So make sure that your new goldfish is well taken care by following my tips and suggestions below.
1. Choose a reputable pet store when purchasing your goldfish. Make sure that the store is extremely clean, the fish are well taken care of and the staff is knowledgeable. This will help to ensure that your goldfish will be physically healthy.
2. When choosing fish tanks, make sure that it will hold at least ten gallons of water. For each additional goldfish you want to add, you should ideally upsize your tank by another eight gallons.
3. Always make sure the tank is filled with cool water. The tank should be between 65 and 68 degrees Fahrenheit and absolutely never above 73 degrees, to ensure the safety of your goldfish. Water above 73 degrees Fahrenheit will result in oxygen deprivation for your goldfish. If this occurs for a long period of time, it will suffer nerve and heart damage, as well as be susceptible to disease and bladder infections. So you will definitely need to purchase a thermometer.
4. Always make sure the fish tank is filled with clean water. Every week you should remove approximately 10-15% of the tank water and replace it with fresh, de-chlorinated tap water. You will also need to purchase a filter to prevent the water from becoming toxic for your fish. Make sure to keep the filter in good working condition and also make sure that it does not produce a strong current in the tank.
5. Provide your goldfish with a healthy diet. There are many good goldfish foods on the market today, so this shouldn’t be difficult. Just make sure the food is high quality and high in carbohydrates. Be sure to avoid overfeeding your goldfish as well. This will result in water pollution, as well as make your goldfish more susceptible to disease. You only need to feed your fish once per day and everything that you put into the tank should be consumed in roughly 2 minutes.
6. Be a responsible pet owner. Your fish is helpless and at your mercy, so make sure that it always has a healthy, safe living environment. By providing it with the essentials, you will ensure a long happy life for your goldfish.
